The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that the Taal volcano might erupt within a few hours or days after it spewed ash, plume, and lava since yesterday. It also said the volcano exhibited a “fast escalation” in volcanic activity.

What to do before volcanic eruption?

  1. Build your family’s emergency supply kit, which includes:
    • Flashlight and extra batteries
    • First aid kit and manual
    • Emergency food and water
    • Manual (nonelectric) can opener
    • Essential medicines
    • Sturdy shoes
    • Respiratory (breathing) protection
    • Eye protection (goggles)
    • Battery-powered radio
  2. Follow the authorities’ instructions if they tell you to evacuate the area.

  5. Listen to disaster sirens and warning signals.
  6. Fill your vehicle’s gas tank to prepare for any emergency.
  7. If no vehicle is available, make arrangements with friends or family for transportation, or follow authorities’ instructions on where to obtain transportation.
  8. Place vehicles under cover, if at all possible.
  9. Put livestock in an enclosed area. Plan to take pets with you, but be aware that many emergency shelters cannot accept animals.
  10. Fill your clean water containers.
  11. Fill sinks and bathtubs with water as an extra supply for washing.
  12. Adjust the thermostat on refrigerators and freezers to the coldest possible temperature. If the power goes out, food will stay fresher longer.
  13. Prepare protective gear in case of heavy ashfall. Buy N95 face masks, or if none is available, you may use a wet towel or put wet tissues under surgical masks.
  14. Avoid going out and stay safe inside your homes.
