The EU’s delegation to the Philippines has announced a wide range of activities focused on children for its annual cultural season, Viva Europa.
“It will give disadvantaged children the opportunity to hear European stories and to participate in games and other fun cultural activities,” EU Ambassador to the Philippines Franz Jessen said at a press briefing today (Monday, April 8).
The tagline for this year’s series of events is “Goes Techno” which will be launched on Europa Day on May 9.
Along with a wide range of star-gazing and other events themed around the EU’s Copernicus satellite system, Viva Europa will cover topics such as children’s rights, environmental protection and music.
Additionally, the Schuman Cup soccer festival will be held on May 4 in Ayala Alabang. This will involve a chance for disadvantaged Filipino children to play football and learn more about the sport.
EU diplomats will also take to the field when they compete against Filipino professional players in friendly matches. The Schuman Cup is a one-day football festival that aims to foster stronger ties between the EU and the Philippines through sports and camaraderie.
The signature musical events for this year’s event is the “Euro-Pinoy Concert” which will be held at The Ruins in Poblacion, Makati on May 7, and “Musica FEUropa”, the annual nationwide choir competition at the Far Eastern University from May 25 to 26.
For the Euro-Pinoy Concert, the performers will come from the Czech Republic, Germany, Spain and the Philippines. Czech composer Lukas Sommer, Spanish flamenco guitarist Alex Alcaraz, Filipino percussionist Jean Paul Zialcita, and Filipina-German DJ Marie Badkiss will join the show.
Viva Europa is cooperation between the EU Delegation to the Philippines and the Embassies of Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
The last of these countries is also represented by the British Council, despite the ongoing uncertainty over the nation’s decision to leave the EU.
Also involved are the Alliance Francaise, the Goethe-Institut, Instituto Cervantes, the Philippine-Italian Association, the Museo Pambata, the Far Eastern University and Bohol City Government.
