Villar questions why vaccinated seniors not allowed to go out

Senator Cynthia Villar questioned the government’s policy to keep seniors indoors even after completing their COVID-19 vaccination.

As the Senate continues its hearing on the industries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Villar and Sen. Nancy Binay discussed the policy regarding senior citizens still staying at home even after being vaccinated.

“Vaccinated na sila, why did you vaccinate them if you will not allow them to get out?” according to 70-year-old Villar, who also stressed that seniors have been placed on the vaccine priority list.

On the other hand, Binay said that it is possible to allow the elderly to leave the house once the workers on the A4 priority list have been vaccinated.

“Siguro ‘pag nandiyan na ‘yung A4, because ‘yung seniors natin, pwede silang mag-spread ng virus, kasi ‘di ba, kahit vaccinated ka na, you can still get the virus, asymptomatic, but you’re spreading,” Binay explained.

But for Villar, why else would the government make the elderly a priority for the vaccine if they are not released even after completing two doses of the vaccine.

“What’s the use? Parang ang labo no’n,” she said.

According to Binay, the priority of the elderly to be vaccinated is so that they do not become seriously ill or die when infected with COVID-19.

“Kasi ‘yung mga senior citizens natin, sila ‘yung pwedeng mag-cause ng collapse ng health system natin kasi sila ‘yung prone (sa COVID-19),” Binay explained.

On the other hand, Villar defended that the elderly now have protection with COVID-19 that they have been vaccinated, so they should be allowed to leave the house.

“’Di ko nga maintindihan ‘yung 65 (anyos), anybody beyond 65, ‘di puwedeng lumabas kahit na vaccinated. Maliit na ang risk mo doon e. Flu lang, not death nor…serious COVID illness,” said Villar.

On the other hand, Binay explained that COVID-19 can still hit the elderly who already have the vaccine and become “spreaders” or infect others.

“Lahat tayo spreader. In other words, bakit naman mo pinagbawalan ang senior citizens… Everybody is like that, kawawa naman ‘yung mga senior citizen. Baka naman maloko na ‘yon sa bahay,” Villar answered.
