Vigilante firing squad kill four men suspected of raping and murdering girl, 14

Four men accused of raping and killing a 14-year-old girl in Marawi City were executed by a vigilante firing squad, with the consent of their families.

Their crime was considered to be particularly heinous because the men were accused of burning the young girl’s body to cover up their crime and using the pages of a Koran to light the fire.

The four were put to death by firing squad on August 17 by unnamed members of a Moro group near the town of Bayang. Both families of the four men agreed to the punishment to prevent a family feud.

Top officials of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao said police and locals say no charges will be filed as no criminal complaint has been filed against the gunmen. Police did arrest the men but released them after 36 hours after no formal complaint was filed against them.

The case is said to be a typical feature of Maranao Culture.

In an original video recording, the four men admitted to breaking into the home of the family and stealing valuables before raping the 14-year-old girl and choking her to death.

One admitted to burning her body using the pages of a Koran to light the fire.

The men were shot at midnight by the masked executioners.
