‘Undesirable’ American and Korean to be deported from the Philippines

Bureau of Immigration
The Bureau of Immigration announced the two deportation orders today (Tuesday, July 24).

The Bureau of Immigration is deporting two men — an American and Korean — for being “undesirable aliens” and working in the Philippines.

The overstaying foreigners were arrested by the bureau’s intelligence agents following raids in Cebu and Pampanga.

In a press release issued today (Tuesday, July 24), BI Commissioner Jaime Morente identified the American as Roy Frederick Barker, aged 74, and the South Korean as Cho Jinrae, 41.

Mr Morente said Barker was arrested in Cebu City last Tuesday (July 17) while Cho was detained in Angeles City on Saturday (July 21).

“Both of them are overstaying and undesirable aliens. They should be deported for blatantly violating our immigration laws,” said the BI chief.

According to the head of Immigration Intelligence, Fortunato Manahan, Barker was issued a summary deportation order for overstaying in the country and “engaging in gainful activity without the proper visa”.

It is alleged that the American was engaged in the ‘ukay-ukay’ trade — or the buying and selling of second-hand clothing.

According to the BI, the South Korean was a fugitive who was wanted in his homeland for alleged fraud.

According to Mr Manahan, Cho was subject of a ‘red notice’ from Interpol and a deportation complaint filed with the BI.

Mr Morente reiterated BI’s warning to all foreigners against violating the country’s immigration laws to avoid deportation. He also appealed to the public to report to his office “any suspicious or illegal activities by foreigners in their locality”.

Meanwhile, Australian nun Sister Patricia Fox launched a last-ditch appeal against her deportation order yesterday. The 71-year-old has been told to leave the country after she was accused of involving herself in political protests.

The investigation into her activities was personally ordered by President Duterte, who later accused her of having a “dirty mouth”.
