A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea early Monday. The quake struck at a depth of 20 miles and about 40 miles from Kokopo in New Britian Island.

Though no major damaged was reported so far, a tsunami warning was issued as “hazardous” due to the strength, depth and local of the epicentre.

“Based on all available data… hazardous tsunami waves are forecast for some coasts,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. The warning has only gone out to the Papua New Guinea region, saying waves between one and three metres are possible.

The initial quake was followed by a smaller 5.7-magnitude aftershock.
