Teacher arrested for ‘sangla-ATM’ modus in Laguna

A teacher allegedly involved in ‘sangla-ATM modus operandi was arrested in Calamba, Laguna. The suspect said she was just helping fellow teachers who were in distress.

In a report by John Consulta on GTV “Balitanghali” on Thursday, the video shows the entrapment operation conducted by National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) personnel against Julieta Palasin, a public school teacher.

According to the NBI, a group is renaming the declared “lost” ATM cards and then using them to teachers in Laguna to apply for loans to lending companies.

He said the teachers would loan P150,000 using the altered card, and the lending company will not notice that the teachers’ salaries will not come in because the manipulated ATM cards are not really theirs.

The fee for an altered card is said to be P35,000, while the syndicate and the teacher split the remaining loan of P115,000.

“Almost P1.5-M kasi P150,000 each ATM. Shocked talaga, kasi expected mo na ‘yung ATM nila ay totoo saka doon papasok lahat ng benefits ng teacher. ‘Yun pala hindi kasi tampered ‘yung ATM nila,” said one complainant.

“On a physical level diyan, ‘yung appearance ng mga altered ATM cards at makikita namin na flawless siya. Ibig sabihin ang gumawa nito could be considered as a ‘golden hand’ kasi lahat ng alignment, ‘yung features ng card, nagaya nila,” said Agent Vic Lorenzo, chief of NBI Cybercrime Division.

The suspect did not deny the accusation, allegedly earning P10,000 per teacher. But the suspect insisted that she was only helping the teachers in distress.

“Alam niyo naman ‘yung iba, ang pinaka-neto na lang P5,000, P6,000 at saka dumating nga kami sa point na hindi basta nakaka-loan ang teacher through salary kundi puro ATM lang siya. Kasi kapag sa salary, nagkaroon nga kami ng net, meron naman siyang kailangang dumaan pa sa verifyer,” the teacher said.

“Tumulong lang din ako, nag-impart ako ‘yun ang isang siguro, pagsisisi,” the suspect added.

On the other hand, Lorenzo warned to be alert from those who offer sangla-ATM because it can be used for illegal transactions.
