SWS: 69% of Filipino families receive financial help from gov’t

The national Social Weather Survey (SWS) of November 21-25, 2020, found 69% of Filipino families saying they received money-help from the government since the Covid-19 crisis began.

This is similar to the 71% in September 2020 and the 72% in July 2020, implying that there has been no increase in the recipients of the government’s cash subsidy between July and November 2020.

The question was, “Mula noong nagsimula ang krisis sa Covid-19, nakatanggap na po ba ang inyong pamilya ng kahit na anong tulong na pera mula sa kahit na anong sangay o ahensiya ng gobyerno? (Since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis, did your family receive help like money from any branch or agency of government?).” No specific government agency was mentioned to respondents.

7% of families received help from the private sector

The November 2020 survey also asked, for the first time, “Mula noong nagsimula ang krisis sa Covid-19, nakatanggap na po ba ang inyong pamilya ng kahit na anong tulong na pera mula sa kahit na sinong pribadong tao, grupo o institusyon? (Since the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis, did your family receive help like money from any private person, group or institution?).” No specific private person, group or institution was mentioned to respondents.

The survey found 7% of families saying they received money-help from the private sector since the Covid-19 crisis started.

54% got money-help from the government once, 48% got it from the private sector once

Among families that got money-help from the government, 54% say they received it once, and 46% received it at least twice, for an average of 1.5 times.

Among those that got money-help from the private sector, 48% say they received it once, and 52% received it at least twice, for an average of 2.1 times.

Families received an average total of Php8,970 from the government, Php6,435 from the private sector

Families that got money-help from the government say they received an average total of Php8,970 (or median of Php8,000) since the start of the Covid-19 crisis. This is Php1,439 above the average total of Php7,531 received by families in September 2020, and Php1,439 above the average total of Php6,588 received in July 2020.

On the other hand, families that got money-help from the private sector say they received an average total of Php 6,435 (or median of Php2,000) since the Covid-19 crisis began.
