SWS: 45% of Filipino families feel poor

The national Social Weather Survey of September 12-16, 2021, found 45% of Filipino families rating themselves as Mahirap or Poor, 34% rating themselves as Borderline Poor (by placing themselves on the horizontal line dividing Poor and Not Poor), and 21% rating themselves as Hindi Mahirap or Not Poor.

This compares to June 2021when 48% felt Poor, 29% felt Borderline Poor, and 23% felt Not Poor.

The estimated numbers of Self-Rated Poor families are 11.4 million in September 2021 and 12.0 million in June 2021.

Self-Rated Poor falls in the Visayas and Metro Manila; Borderline Poor rises in all areas except Mindanao

The 3-point decrease in Self-Rated Poor in the third quarter of 2021 was due to a sharp decline in the Visayas and a slight decrease in Metro Manila, offset by a steady score in Balance Luzon and an increase in Mindanao.

Compared to June 2021, Self-Rated Poor fell in the Visayas from 70% to 54%.

It fell in Metro Manila from 43% to 34%.

It stayed at 38% in Balance Luzon from June 2021 to September 2021.

However, it rose in Mindanao from 51% to 58%.

On the other hand, Borderline Poor rose in the Visayas from 24% in June 2021 to 42% in September 2021.

It rose in Metro Manila from 19% to 30%.

It rose slightly in Balance Luzon from 28% to 32%.

However, it fell in Mindanao from 42% to 34%.

Compared to June 2021, Not Poor hardly changed in all areas: it went from 7% to 4% in the Visayas, from 38% to 37% in Metro Manila, from 34% to 30% in Balance Luzon, and from 7% to 8% in Mindanao.

The Food-Poor are 30% of families, the Borderline Food-Poor are 44%, and the Not Food-Poor are 26%

On Self-Rated Food Poverty, the September 2021 survey found 30% of families rating themselves as Food-Poor, 44% rating themselves as Borderline Food-Poor (by placing themselves on the horizontal line dividing Food-Poor and Not Food-Poor), and 26% rating themselves Not Food-Poor.

This compares to June 2021 when 32% felt Food-Poor, 38% felt Borderline Food-Poor, and 29% felt Not Food-Poor.

The estimated numbers of Self-Rated Food Poor families are 7.5 million in September 2021 and 8.2 million in June 2021.

Food-Poor falls, and Borderline Food-Poor rises, in all areas except Mindanao

The 2-point decrease in Self-Rated Food-Poor in the third quarter of 2021 was due to declines in all areas except in Mindanao.

Compared to June 2021, Self-Rated Food-Poor fell in the Visayas from 40% to 30%.

It fell in Metro Manila from 30% to 24%.

It fell slightly in Balance Luzon from 29% to 26%.

However, it rose slightly in Mindanao from 34% to 40%.

On the other hand, Borderline Food-Poor rose in the Visayas from 43% in June 2021 to 60% in September 2021.

It rose in Metro Manila from 26% to 32%.

It rose slightly in Balance Luzon from 32% to 39%.

However, it fell in Mindanao from 55% to 48%.

Compared to June 2021, Not Food-Poor did not change in Metro Manila and Mindanao, while it fell slightly in the Visayas and Balance Luzon.
