Surrendered communist rebels given 700,000 pesos to rebuild lives

Fourteen surrendered New People’s Army communist rebels have received 700,000 pesos from the Government of Davao del Sur.

The fourteen rebels received the assistance on Monday at at a resort in Davao City – the money is part of a project from the Comprehensive Local Integration Program, otherwise known as CLIP.

Officials said the money was given to the former NPA rebels is a collaboration effort with the provincial government, police and other sources that are attempting to assist ex-rebels with becoming productive members of society while assisting them to get back on their feet.

The payment also ends a peaceful closure to the armed conflict that has plagued the Philippines for decades.

The 14 members were part of a small group of voluntary surrenderees and will be rewarded by the government.

The same 14 men each received 15,000 pesos in immediate cash assistance after they surrendered.
