State of calamity being considered in Baco, Oriental Mindoro

A state of calamity is being declared in the town of Baco, Oriental Mindoro, due to the damage caused by the floods.

The water rose in some areas in the said town this Sunday due to the incessant rain due to the southwest wind.

“Bukas po ay mag-uusap kami para mag-convene para ma-assess ang total damage para po kung kinakailangan, makapag-declare po kami ng local ng state of calamity,” said Baco Mayor Reynaldo Marco.

Nearly P8 million worth of flood damage to agriculture and infrastructure in Baco while 800 families from 18 barangays were affected.

In Barnaga Burbuli, vehicles cannot enter due to the height of the flood on the roads.

As a result, residents descended on the flood and met those delivering relief goods.

The people of Paluan helped to bag the sand that they blocked from the big waves.

Some houses have also been destroyed by strong currents caused by bad weather.

The floods in Paluan have subsided, affecting more than 500 families.

The people living on the beach wish they had a dike to protect them.

Meanwhile, thousands of residents were evacuated from Luzon due to the rain brought by the southwest, accompanied by an earthquake that shook some areas on Saturday morning.

The southwest monsoon affected typhoon Fabian and flooded parts of Manila and neighboring areas on Saturday.

In Marikina, more than 15,000 people have been evacuated since 10 a.m., after the Marikina River was raised on the second alarm.

Up to 3,077 families or 13,225 individuals are in evacuation centers in Marikina City.

Residents in the low-lying areas of the barangay went to Malanday Elementary School — the largest evacuation center in the city. According to the evacuation camp manager, 735 families or nearly 3,000 individuals were there.

In Manila, more than 300 families were evacuated due to the effects of the southwest monsoon. But some do not want to evacuate for fear of losing their belongings.
