Sogo hotel collapsed, 2 dead

Two were killed while another was injured after a SOGO hotel collapsed in Manila yesterday morning.

Injured victim Edson Ison was rushed to hospital after debris from the five-story hotel located on Mabini St., Malate, Manila fell on him.

The victims were construction workers who were currently demolishing the SOGO hotel.

Rescuers recovered Melo Ison under the rubble at around 3 p.m. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

A few hours later at 5:45 p.m., Jeromie Fabello’s remains were recovered, which was also under the building’s debris.

Responders use a drone to find the two and various equipment including a crane to remove parts of the building that trapped the victims.

According to Manila Police District Director P / Brig. General Vicente Danao Jr., the building collapsed at around 9:15 am while 22 construction workers were inside.

SOGO Hotel collapsed under demolition

The building has a permit to demolish since August 2.

However, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said authorities had placed the demolition on hold.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno also tasked City Engineering Department head Armand Andres to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and to determine who should be held responsible.

The hotel is known for its budget-friendly rooms and is famous for its per hour accommodation. Its motto says, “So Clean So Good.”
