SM Bonus sugar not registered with FDA

SM Bonus Sugar was among the list of unregistered products the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released on Tuesday night.

In an advisory dated Oct. 22, 2020, the FDA warned the public against buying and consuming the following unregistered products:

  • Melvan Ginger Brew with Turmeric and Lemongrass
  • Sweet Valley Freeze Dried Cranberry Coated with Milk Chocolate
  • Lorenzo Farm Dark Chocolate
  • SM Bonus Brown Sugar
  • SM Bonus Refined Sugar

“The FDA verified through post-marketing surveillance that the abovementioned food products are not registered, and no corresponding Certificates of Product Registration (CPR) have been issued. Pursuant to the Republic Act No. 9711, otherwise known as the “Food and Drug Administration Act of 2009”, the manufacture, importation, exportation, sale, offering for sale, distribution, transfer, non-consumer use, promotion, advertising, or sponsorship of health products without the proper authorization is prohibited,” the agency said.

“Since these unregistered food products have not gone through evaluation process of the FDA, the agency cannot assure its quality and safety,” it added.

SM Bonus sugar not registered with FDA

The management of SM Bonus and the other brands have yet to make their statements regarding the FDA warning.

On October 27, also warned all healthcare professionals and the general public not to purchase and consume the following unregistered food products:

1. LYN’S FOOD PRODUCTS Banana Chips, 120g
2. JHAN & CHIN FOOD PRODUCTS TURGIN+ 8n1 Turmeric Ginger Herbal Tea, 150g
3. LYN’S FOOD PRODUCTS Special Kamote Chips (Sweet Kamote Chips), 85g
4. BADIANGAN Ginger with Lemongrass Candy
5. BADIANGAN Ginger Candy

“All concerned establishments are warned not to distribute, advertise, or sell the said violative food products until CPR are issued, otherwise, regulatory actions and sanctions shall be strictly pursued. Always check if a product has been registered with the FDA before purchasing it by making use of the embedded Search feature of the FDA website accessible at www.fda.gov.ph. You may also look for the FDA Registration number on the product label if available or the name of the product,” the FDA warned.
