The website pattayashore.com has compiled a top-ten list of global destinations for sex tourism – so how was the Philippines rated?
The list may surprise for a number of reasons – clearly there are no hard-and-fast rules of popularity.
For one thing, although the vast bulk of sex tourism is male-oriented, the ladies have their favourite destinations too. It is perhaps one of the world’s worst-kept secrets why certain African countries are considerably more popular with female solo travellers – often of “a certain age” – than with male.
Maybe it is no surprise that Thailand continues to hold on to the number one position – that never seems to change, at least for a “long time” now.
Perhaps credit for this enduring popularity can be laid at the high-heeled feet of the nation’s ladyboys and the thriving, vibrant LGBT scene – ensuring that it really does offer ‘something for everyone’.

Perhaps there are some surprises there. Maybe the varying degrees of legality has an effect, or perhaps it’s just down to the reputations that have been thoroughly bedded-in for decades.
By the way, despite the apparently relaxed attitude towards sex-for-sale – prostitution in the Philippines is actually illegal. That can be difficult to believe if you visit Angeles City, Subic Bay or any other of the numerous red-light districts throughout the archipelago.
Likewise, the sheer number of ladyboys throughout the country is totally odds with what remains a very sexually conservative, predominantly Catholic, nation. But this is the Philippines, where everything can sometimes seem like a world turned upside-down.
To be clear, PLN in no way endorses the sex trade in the Philippines or anywhere else. But, if you do succumb to temptation, please wear a condom, for everybody’s sake.
