According to data gathered and analyzed by the ABS-CBN Investigative and Research Group, most of those who develop severe and critical COVID-19 are those who have not been vaccinated.
According to data from the Lung Center of the Philippines, of the 146 patients admitted as of August 16, 108 have not been vaccinated.
That is, most or 7 out of every 10 COVID-19 patients there do not yet have the vaccine.
Ten percent have been 1 dose or partially vaccinated, and 16 percent are fully vaccinated.
Investigating the same data by epidemiologist Dr. John Wong, it appears that the vaccine is given protection even when it is only 1 dose.
“The difference is small because they are only partially vaccinated, so they only have partial immunity. Pero the vaccine is still effective kasi there is a decrease in severe disease,” said Wong.
“But of course, it is better to be fully vaccinated kasi your protection against severe disease goes up to 86 percent,” he said.
The Lung Center did not record any mild cases because they only accept moderate to critical cases.
According to Tala Hospital in Caloocan, from August 6 to 10, of the 140 COVID-19 patients, 31 were fully vaccinated.
Most severe, critical COVID-19 patients unvaccinated: data
Of those vaccinated, 3 experienced mild symptoms, 25 were moderate, 2 were severe, and 1 was critical.
Of the 31, 29 were admitted and cured, while 2 died.
According to Tala Hospital Chief Dr. Fritz Famaran, those who die even with the vaccine usually have other diseases.
“More often than not, may kasama ‘yan commorbids like high blood, na-stroke, and diabetes. These are contributory factors for the demise of the patient… not necessarily coming per se from the COVID-19 infection only,” said Famaran.
The Lung Center and Tala data also did not differ from those gathered by the National Task Force (NTF) Against COVID-19.
So NTF special adviser Dr. Ted Herbosa, the outbreak of COVID-19 cases in the country can be considered a “pandemic of the unvaccinated.”
“Kinakausap ko ‘yong mga director ng ospital, parang 80 percent ng mga naku-confine ngayon ay unvaccinated… at iyong mayroong remainder, about 10 to 15 percent, 1 dose pa lang ang natanggap,” said Herbosa.
