Sara Duterte-Isko Moreno tandem surfaced

The possible tandem of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte and Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno in the upcoming Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections in 2022 surfaced yesterday.

This comes after the re-alliance of Duterte’s Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) and Moreno’s National Unity Party (NUP).

NUP spokesman and deputy secretary-general for political affairs, Reggie Velasco, said this tandem is expected to be discussed at the formal merger of the two parties this year.

“Of course, we’re open to a Sara-Isko tandem. We don’t have decision yet on our presidential and vice presidential bets, so we’re open to all candidates. There will be a decision-making process that will happen from within party and outside the party,” said Velasco.

But Velasco clarified that until now, Moreno has not decided what position to run for.

“Mayor Isko is on his first term and still has two terms. We are also waiting for his decision whether he wants to run for re-election, or he wants to seek a national office, either be a senator, vice president, or even president,” said Velasco.

In August 2018, the two parties joined forces to support the senatorial candidates they were endorsing in the 2019 elections.

“Under the alliance agreement, HNP will help us decide on that. We will have a common candidate for president, vice president, and then senators. We will also have the right to nominate for the common slate,” Velasco added.

In April 2021 Pulse Asia Survey, Sara Duterte still leads survey of possible presidential bets in 2022.

Former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. (13 percent) was second to Duterte. Senator Grace Poe and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno followed 12 percent each and Sen. Manny Pacquiao with 11 percent.

“If the May 2022 elections were held during the survey period, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte would be declared as the winner in the presidential race with a national voter preference of 27,” said the polling firm.
