Robredo blames failed leadership over cop’s killing of neighbors

Vice President Robredo said the “failed leadership” of the Philippine National Police allowed police officer Jonel Nuezca’s to remain in service despite his numerous offenses unit he killed his neighbors over the weekend.

“There will be those who will lay all blame on the person who pulled the trigger as if he were not part of a larger architecture of impunity. Despite a clear pattern of brutality and a string of cases that made his propensity for violence apparent, the leadership allowed him to remain in service: May tsapa, may baril,” Robredo said.

“Kaisa ako sa pagtatrabaho upang magsulong ng mas makataong kultura sa hanay ng pulisya, at sa panawagan ng hustisya para sa mag-inang Gregorio,” she added.

The Vice President then said that the shooting incident deserves lingering condemnation so that it would never happen again.

“May we find anchorage in our common human response to these deaths: Kinilabutan tayo, nabasag ang puso natin, mali ito. We are bound in horror, grief, and empathy for Sonya and Frank Gregorio, as we are bound in condemnation of their senseless murders and of the murders of so many innocents over the past years,” Robredo said.

“May those who wish to downplay what happened by creating discord among us never succeed in stripping us of our humanity,” she added.

The  , the police officer who killed his mother and son neighbors, had six administrative cases filed against him since 2010.

According to the data obtained by GMA News Online from Police Brigadier General Valeriano De Leon, Nuezca was suspended for 10 days in 2010 for reasons not detailed by the authorities.

In 2013, he faced a grave misconduct case, but it was dismissed due to lack of evidence.

In April 2014, the Tarlac killer cop faced less grave neglect of duty for refusing to take a drug test. Records showed that Nuezca had left the testing area without permission from authorities.

In 2016, he faced serious neglect of duty after failing to attend a court hearing as a prosecution witness of a drug case. The case was dropped and closed.

Last year, Nuezca again had grave misconduct (homicide) case filed against him. However, it was dismissed due to a lack of substantial evidence.
