Quarantined OFW mother begs to attend child’s funeral

A mother of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) pleaded for her quarantine period to be shortened so that she could be with her daughter, who passed away suddenly last week.

In a report by Cedric Castillo on GMA News “24 Oras” on Thursday, it was said that Grade 10 student Cherry Mae Saranza was rushed to the hospital after it was noticed that she could not speak and was pale.

A CT scan revealed a blood clot in her brain until she passed away on July 7.

Due to travel difficulties, OFW mother, Rosamil, who came from the United Arab Emirates, did not return home immediately.

“Hindi mo man lang mahawakan, sa camera mo lang makikita. Hanggang sa tuluyan bumigay na. Kinakausap ko lang: ‘Antayin mo lang si Rosamil,” she said.

So far, Rosamil is only on the third day of the 14-day quarantine protocol being implemented by the government as a precaution against COVID-19-especially, the Delta variant.

She requested that she be allowed to stay in the quarantine area for a short time to go to her daughter’s wake in Tanza, Cavite.

“Nagmamakaawa po sa inyo sa kahuli-hulihang pagkakataon, pagbigyan niyo na makasama ko nang saglit ang anak ko,” said Rosamil.

“‘Yun ang kahilingan na makita ang anak ko. Nandito na ako sa bansa natin, konti na lang makasama ko ang anak ko,” she added.

According to the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF), the Department of Health can decide whether the quarantine period of returning Filipinos and OFWs can be shortened.

The UAE is among the countries enforcing travel restrictions in the Philippines due to the threat of the more contagious Delta variant of COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Bureau of Immigration Commissioner Jaime reminded the traveling public that the ongoing travel restrictions on passengers coming from 8 countries should remain until July 31.

According to Morente, the extension of the temporary travel ban for those coming from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates has been extended until the month’s end.

“With the recent inclusion of Indonesia, the temporary ban now covers eight countries,” he stated.
