The Episcopalian Church of St Mary and St John was the largest Protestant church in all of pre-war Manila.

The church was constructed between 1903 and 1907 and included a bishop’s residence on the grounds.

The construction was made possible by a gift of $100,000 from an anonymous donor – an additional $20,000 was given by Mr and Mrs George C Thomas of Pennsylvania.

The church was sadly a casualty of World War Two when it was completely destroyed in the bombing of Manila.

Today the Manila Pavilion Hotel, formerly the Manila Hilton, occupies the spot where this stunning church once stood.
