PHL Legion of Honor asked to be given to Hidilyn Diaz

Deputy Speaker Camille Villar (Las Piñas) asked President Rodrigo Duterte to award the Philippine Legion of Honor to Olympics gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz. The Armed Forces of the Philippines raised the rank of Diaz as a military reservist.

“It is high time to confer to the four-time Olympian the Philippine Legion of Honor (Lehiyong Pandangal ng Pilipinas) for her heart-warming victory and for uplifting national glory and pride in the world sports stage,” Villar said in the House Resolution No. 2020

Aside from the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medal, Villar said Diaz also inspired Filipinos with her dedication and sacrifice.

Diaz is said to be a symbol of hope and unity and has given great honor to the country for his success in sports.

According to the lawmaker, the Philippine Legion of Honor is considered the highest honor is given by the President to a person who no longer has to go through Congress.

Diaz’s win gave the Philippines its first gold medal since the country joined the Olympics in 1924.

Meanwhile, Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Cirilito Sobejana announced that Diaz is already a “staff sergeant” as a reservist in the Philippine Air Force.

“The Philippine Air Force through its Commanding General approved the promotion of Sgt Hidilyn Diaz effective 27 July 2021 to the rank of Staff Sergeant,” the official said.

“We laud and support this move at the General Headquarters to mark SSg Diaz’ remarkable achievements in the field of sports and for bringing pride and glory to our country,” Sobejana added.

According to Sobejana, the AFP is proud of Diaz’s victory.

Meanwhile, Diaz said the happiness was different when she finally won against the Chinese opponent.

“Gaya nang sabi ko, ‘di ako makapaniwala na nagawa ko ‘yon. Kung babalikan ko ‘yon parang yes, sa wakas nagawa ko, natalo ko ang China. Buti hindi ako na-pressure sa Olympic record,” said Diaz.

It will be recalled that Hidilyn Diaz trained in Malaysia for almost two years before she competed in the Olympics, which continues to be held today in Tokyo, .
