For those going through tough financial times, the Philippines government has rolled out a card for cash aid. The world has been gravely affected by the ongoing pandemic, and the situation in the Philippines is not any better.
So far there have been 4,076 confirmed cases and more than 200 deaths in the Philippines. As a result, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte ordered a lockdown of the Metro Manila region. This lockdown is designed to help, but can financially hurt the vulnerable.
For the poor, the sick, and the less fortunate, this has made a bad situation worse. But the government has now stepped in with a card for cash aid. This card provides money to select groups to help ensure they are able to meet the basic needs of life.
In Manilla, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has started distributing cards. The amount of money on the cards range from PHP 5,000 to PHP 8,000. And these cards will be given to those most negatively affected by quarantine.
In Pasay City, the DSWD has joined forces with the Crisis Intervention Unit (CIU), to distribute the PHP 8,000 cash assistance to some 161 people in the tricycle operations business and the Drivers Association – TODA federation.
These were the first batch of people to receive the aid, which is a small number, considering there are more than 3,000 TODA registered members. Additionally, 77,674 in Paranaque and 185,680 in Manila received the aid as well.
The card beneficiaries in the scheme called “Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program,” in the CAR, NCR, BARMM, CALABARZON, and Regions 1,2 and 3 received the card by April 3.
The Cash Aid
Beneficiaries from other regions, namely IV B, V, VI, VII, and IX, all received their subsidies by April 4. Regions, VII, X, XI, CARAGA, and XII also received emergency subsidies by April 5.
The government has also announced it will distribute Social Amelioration Program (SAP) payments. These payments will be made between April and May.
Based on the president’s directive, this distribution of assistance will be in the DSWD’s full supervision and control. The DSWD is free to seek assistance from the LGUs in the subsidies distribution and the National Police – PNP and the Armed Forces as well.
