Pepito slightly intensifies; 8 provinces under signal no.1

Tropical Depression Pepito slightly intensifies as it moves west-northwestward, raising signal number 1 in Northern and Central Luzon.

According to the severe weather bulletin of Pagasa issued 5 pm, Monday, Pepito is moving West Northwestward at 20 km/h with maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 70 km/h.

At 4:00 PM today, the center of Tropical Depression “PEPITO” was estimated based on all available data at 410 km East of Virac, Catanduanes (13.7 °N, 128.0 °E ).

Pepito will move west northwestward or northwestward today, then will turn westward tomorrow towards the Northern-Central Luzon area. On the forecast track, the tropical cyclone is forecast to make landfall over the eastern coast of Northern-Central Luzon area between tomorrow evening and Wednesday early morning. It may emerge over the West Philippine Sea on Wednesday morning.

It is forecast to intensify into a tropical storm before it makes landfall. After crossing the landmass of Luzon, Pepito may further intensify over the West Philippine Sea and may reach severe tropical storm category by Thursday.

Today through tomorrow morning, light to moderate with at times heavy rains may be experienced over Quezon, Bicol Region, Eastern and Central Visayas, and Mindanao. Flooding (including flashfloods) and rain-induced landslides may occur during heavy or prolonged rainfall especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards.

PAGASA Regional Services Divisions may issue local thunderstorm/rainfall advisories and heavy rainfall warnings as appropriate.

Strong- to near gale-force winds will be experienced in areas under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) #1 within 36 hours. Based on available meteorological data, TCWS #1 may be raised over Benguet, the eastern portions of Abra and Pangasinan, and the rest of Kalinga, Mountain Province, Nueva Vizcaya, and Nueva Ecija in the next bulletin.
