Philippine Airlines (PAL) has announced a new service between Davao and the surfer’s paradise island of Siargao.

The flag carrier said the new four times weekly service will launch on March 25.

Aside from eyeing Davao Airport as a major hub in the coming years, the move also aims to support a government drive to promote tourism in the south of the country.

Siargao meanwhile is widely considered to be the country’s premier surfing venue.

Harry Inoferio, PAL senior vice president for Visayas and Mindanao Sales and Services, suggested that diving and surfing enthusiasts could opt to take the airline’s Manila-Davao, Cebu-Davao, and Clark-Davao routes to enjoy a break Davao before heading to Siargao.

To further boost sales in this maiden route, an introductory fare of as little as 1,000 pesos will be offered for round trips on the new service until April 15.

PAL said it would use its all-new Bombardier Q400 Next Generation aircraft for the route.

Meanwhile, also starting March 25, PAL will also offer daily flights between Davao and Tagbilaran from the current four times weekly offering, it said.

The new route is just the latest expansion for PAL. Late last year we reported on the launch of new non-stop services from Manila to Toronto and Auckland.

The airline also said the delivery of two more Boeing 777-300s and two Airbus A350-900s will also allow it to increase flights between Manila and the US West Coast, as well as a nonstop Manila to New York service.

A statement from the airline read: “In the meantime, PAL will be introducing into service the long-range version of the Airbus A321 NEOs, which will enable the flag carrier to open new nonstop routes such as Manila-Brisbane and Manila-New Delhi.”

PAL also launching a new route between Cebu and Bangkok in December, running three times a week.
