Oil spill being prevented after two ships collided in Tondo, Manila

The cargo vessel MV Palawan Pearl capsized in the waters of Baseco Beach in Tondo, Manila, after it collided with a foreign multi-purpose vessel early Thursday morning.

The ship is about 100 meters away from the shore. Half of it is still submerged in water.

It is not approached today by fishermen who are still sailing in Manila Bay from Baseco.

Some fear the possible impact of an oil spill from the ship with 3,000 liters of diesel in its storage tank.

According to the latest report released by the Philippine Coast Guard, the MV Palawan Pearl came from Commander’s wharf in Baseco Compound and was bound for El Nido, Palawan.

On the way to Bulacan, a multipurpose vessel BKM 104 registered in Cyprus hit it.

According to the skipper of MV Palawan Pearl, who spoke to the Coast Guard, they tried to avoid the multi-purpose vessel coming from the left of their ship and traveling 10 knots.

It hit twice on the port side or left side of the cargo vessel, so it capsized.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Commodore Armand Balilo said they are still investigating the incident.

They will conduct salvage operations on the ship and will also meet with its owners.

An oil spill boom was placed around the ship due to the detected oil sheen or thin signs of oil, but it was swept away by water approaching the ship on Friday morning.

On August 11, 2006, an oil spill occurred in the Panay Gulf when the oil tanker, MT Solar 1, sank off the coasts of Guimaras and Negros in the Philippines, causing what is considered the worst oil spill in the country.

In April, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has banned private yachts and other ships from entering and anchoring near the coast of Manila Bay.

This is after the water in Manila Bay turned yellow due to the release of dirty water by a vessel, the MV Sarangani.
