Robredo regrets not having face-to-face classes before Delta variant spread

Vice President Leni Robredo said he regrets that the students did not even have face-to-face classes before the country’s more contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 spread.

Robredo has previously pushed for face-to-face classes in areas with COVID-19 because many students have difficulty with distance learning.

“Sa akin, ‘yong nakalipas na isa’t kalahating taon, ‘missed opportunity’ iyon. Noong wala pang Delta variant, sobrang daming [local government unit] all over the Philippines ‘yong wala namang cases,” said Robredo on his radio show this Sunday.

Last year, the Office of the Vice President also built community learning hubs in 58 areas, where students without gadgets and learning difficulties can be helped using printed modules.

The Department of Education was supposed to conduct a dry run of limited face-to-face classes in some areas this year. Still, President Rodrigo Duterte canceled it due to the more contagious variants of COVID-19.

Duterte also insisted that he will not allow face-to-face classes until the country achieves herd immunity.

Last week, some senators said they were disappointed with DepEd’s seemingly poor marketing plan to restore face-to-face classes.

According to Robredo, DepEd should be more “proactive” in pushing for the return of face-to-face classes.

“Dapat ipakita nila (DepEd) na not ‘one size fits all.’ Parang resigned na tayo. ‘Di natin naiisip ang mga bata,” said Robredo.
