More than 200 were arrested for violating the 48-hour “hard lockdown” in District 1 of Tondo, Manila, that took effect from 5 am on Sunday.

The number is small compared to the total 800,000 residents in the area, said Manila police chief Brig. Gen. Rolando Miranda.

He said the lockdown violators were taken to a temporary holding facility with a doctor and a fiscal who will prepare the case against them. Violators who are minors and with disabilities were brought home.

Mayor Isko Moreno subjected Tondo District 1 to hard lockdown as it has one of the highest numbers of COVID-19 cases in the city.  Its number of enhanced community quarantine violators also increased in recent days.

The area now has 109 confirmed cases based on the results of the rapid testing. They are yet to be verified using the real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test.

Some residents of Puerto Princesa return cash aid

Several Puerto Princesa City residents have voluntarily removed their names from the list of government recipients after their family members first received them.

Maria Permaran went to Barangay San Pedro village hall to cancel her P5,000 from the social amelioration program since her husband was already given the cash assistance.

Permaran said the Department of Social Welfare and Development gave her a form for SAP. But her husband had earlier claimed that he was getting some help and so she just canceled the money she was supposed to receive.

Although both are now unemployed, they only wanted to be honest and give to others.

Reymart Gacayan was also among those who went to the barangay to cancel his name to the beneficiaries, after getting SAP from another village.

“Hindi ko na po ike-claim yung P5,000 po na matatanggap ko sa Social Amelioration Program dahil nag-doble na po yung pangalan ko. Naka-claim na po ako sa Barangay Sta. Lucia. Ibinabalik ko po yung pera para makatulong sa iba para po sa higit na mas nangangailangan,” he said.

The City Social Welfare and Development Office is also grateful for Permaran and Gacayan’s generosity, as their return has been a great help to others.
