Full-face visor helmet required for motorcycle drivers, riders – MMDA

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) now requires motorcycle riders and backriders to wear full-face visor helmets in areas under general community quarantine (GCQ).

MMDA general manager Jojo Garcia said in an interview on GMA Network’s Unang Hirit that the Joint Task Force (JTF) COVID Shield ordered the new regulation.

“Pagdating naman sa helmet, may tinatawag silang full face-visor. ‘Yung plastic na visor na hanggang baba siya. Siguro ito’ yung substitute,” Garcia said.

(When it comes to the helmet, they need to wear full face-visor. The plastic visor should cover up to the chin. This could be the substitute.)

Garcia explained wearing a face shield while driving a motorcycle could be dangerous because the wind could drift the protective gear.

“Kailangan na kailangan na naka-face mask tayo at naka-face shield  pa. So kung plastic na face shield ang gagamitin sa motor, medyo delikado po ‘yan. Liliparin’ yan unlike noong full-face visor,” he said.

(We really need to wear face masks and face shields. So if a plastic face shield is used while riding the motorcycle, it is a bit dangerous. It will fly unlike the full-face visor.)

“Kailangan abot hanggang baba ang visor o shield ng helmet. Dapat isuot ito kasama ng mask sa buong biyahe,” the MMDA said.

(The visor or shield of the helmet must reach the chin. It should be worn with a mask throughout the trip.)

Joint Task Force COVID Shield commander Police Lieutenant General Guillermo Eleazar earlier said riders living in the same house no longer need to use motorcycle barriers in areas under GCQ starting Wednesday.

Back-riding on motorcycles will be allowed as long as the passenger is an authorized person outside of residence (APOR).

However, those who are not living together must still use motorcycle barriers. Also, both riders should wear full-face helmets and face masks.

Department of Transportation (DOTr) earlier announced all passengers traveling through public transport are required to wear face shields starting August 15, 2020.

Last week, Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said the wearing of  inside enclosed spaces such as malls and other establishments is now also required.
