The recorded number of COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila remains high as the number of cases in the country continues to rise, according to the Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday.

At the hearing of the Committee on Metro Manila Development in the House of Representatives, Health Director Gloria Balboa said that in the latest record, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the National Capital Region has reached 423,230.

Based on DOH data, as of April 21, NCR has recorded over 54,000 new COVID-19 infections in the past 2 weeks.

Quezon City leads with the most cases in the region after recording more than 12,000; Manila followed with over 7,000; and Pasig with nearly 5,000 new cases.

The problem, according to Balboa, is the main hospitals in Metro Manila due to the high number of people admitting with COVID-19.

It will be recalled that in early April, other localities also distributed modular tents to fill the filling medical facilities in the region and neighboring provinces due to the new virus surge.

Reports said that around 77% and 80% of the COVID-19 cases at the San Lazaro Hospital and the Lung Center of the Philippines are in critical condition.

“In fact ‘yung census namin kahapon, 77% of our patients are critical in , in severity,” Dr. Norberto Francisco, Lung Center of the Philippines spokesperson, said.

Meanwhile, 80% of the patients in the San Lazaro Hospital are in severe to critical condition.

As of April 19, the NCR is still at moderate risk for COVID-19 beds.

However, the intensive care unit utilization in Metro Manila is already at high risk due to the 84% bed occupancy.
