Meralco customers can pay via installment

Meralco has promised that it will allow customers to pay for electricity gradually if they can’t really afford to pay.

“Case-to-case basis. We go out of our way naman kung ‘di talaga kayang magbayad,”said Meralco Spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga.

The power disconnection will continue on September 8, when Metro Manila is removed from modified enhanced community quarantine status (MECQ).

Meralco had earlier stopped disconnecting electricity service in areas under enhanced community quarantine and MECQ.

Next week will also determine whether Meralco’s electricity bill for September will increase or decrease.

When it comes to the power supply issue, the Department of Energy (DOE) has assured that there will be enough power during the 20-day maintenance shutdown of the Malampaya natural gas facility from October 2 to 22.

No brownout will occur unless there is a forced outage, according to Mario Marasigan, director of the Electric Power Industry Management Bureau under the DOE.

Because power plants rely on Malampaya will use more expensive fuel, consumer bills are expected to increase.

Five large plants that supply natural gas from Malampaya need to use other fuels and operate so as not to run out of power supply in Luzon.

In maintenance, hundreds of workers will be taken to the platform in the middle of the sea.

To avoid the threat of COVID-19, in addition to the 7-day quarantine, a flotel or floating hotel has also been contracted to accommodate the facility’s repairers.

The DOE also promised an adequate power supply in next year’s election.

Based on their forecast, no yellow alert and power interruption will be seen.

“Makikita natin sa initial forecast na ito na sapat ang supply, walang yellow alert. Kita po ninyo walang lumalampa — bumababang green bar doon sa yellow line at wala rin pong power interruption dahil sa supply…Sa madaling salita ginagawa po lahat natin upang masiguro na may enough supply tayo ng kuryente sa darating na halalan sa 2022 and beyond,” said Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Alfonso Cusi Thursday night.
