Mayor Isko opens Manila City Library

Manila City Mayor Isko Domagoso and  Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan led on Monday, October 12, the inauguration of the Manila City Library along Taft Avenue.

Vicente Catabijan, president of the St. Mary’s Publishing Corporation and head of the Manila City Library Mylene Villanueva, also attended the new city library’s inauguration.

The mayor expressed his gratitude towards the staff of the Manila City Library for keeping it clean and conducive for learning. He also thanked Catabijan for donating P1 million worth of reading materials and books.

Villanueva praised Mayor Isko and Vice-mayor Lacuna-Pangan’s effort in providing the city library its computers and wifi connection for students.

“Kung makikita niyo lang Mayor ang mga ngiti ng mga staff ngayon dahil sa mga makabagong kagamitan na kanila ngayong ginagamit. Ngayon lang rin nangyari Mayor na ang aming Alkade ay bumibisita sa mga silid-aklatan na totoo pong tunay na nagpataas sa matagal na po nilang bagsak na moral sa matagal na panahon,” Villanueva said.

Lacuna-Pangan said that libraries are not mere storage of books but a venue where one could and change his quality of life.

Mayor Isko meanwhile said that while most people to search through Google, there was still a need to continue upgrading libraries and to urge the youth to visit them. He added reading would help sharpen memory, especially to the elderly.

“Hindi pwedeng isantabi at baliwalain ang kahalagahan ng silid-aklatan,” the Mayor said. “Kailangan natin patuloy na pagyamanin ang kaalaman ng publiko and the government should be providing opportunity for them,” he added.

The mayor also noted the importance of libraries and shared that he was always at the library browsing on hard copies of the Reader’s Digest and Current Events as a public school student.

“Hanggang ngayon, nagbabasa ako, whether virtual or physical. I continue to acquire knowledge, learn from it, and when there are things that are applicable to governance, I apply. Ang pag-aaral is a life-long journey kaya di tayo dapat huminto,” he said.
