Newborn in Zamboanga del Norte positive in COVID-19 rapid test

According to Dr. Esmeralda Nadela, provincial health officer ng Zamboanga del Norte, the patient underwent rapid testing because of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) threat.

Nadela said the baby came in because of infection and sepsis. The infant also suffered a seizure and abdominal distension.

She said they were alarmed because all of those who had close contact with the baby tested negative for COVID-19 and are now also isolated.

The baby was born at the Rural Health Unit in Polanco town on April 25, and her parents have had no travel history for the past 30 days.

However, due to the rapid test, swab samples from the patient were immediately taken to Zamboanga City for a confirmatory test.

“Ang confirmatory talaga is the RT-PCR. Itong rapid test ito ‘yong pag-test lang ng antibodies na ‘pag may active infection, mayroon siyang pre-history of infection like for example ‘yong sa IGM na may pre-disinfection siya, but that doesn’t necessarily mean na COVID ano siya, may history of COVID. Pwede namang ibang sakit like viral infection, like influenza,” said Nadela.

Polanco Mayor Evan Hope Olvis immediately ordered to disinfect the entire Rural Health Unit to ensure the facility was safe from the virus.
