Lacson-Sotto tandem files COCs for election 2022

Sen. Panfilo Lacson and Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III have already filed their candidacies in the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for the 2022 national and local elections, where the former and vice president will run for president.

It was only on September 8 that the compound formally announced their run in the next election, something they confirmed when they presented their certificates of candidacy (COC) this Wednesday.

“Kakayahan, katapatan, katapangan. Mga katangiang taglay ng Lacson-Sotto tandem na layuning maibalik ang tiwala ng mga mamamayan sa ating pamahalaan,” said Lacson.

“Kahit minsan, hindi tumanggap ng suhol kapalit ng serbisyo publiko. Nananatiling walang bahid ng korapsyon, ang siyang gagamitin naming pinakamabisang armas para buwagin ang mga sindikato sa loob at sa labas man ng gobyerno.”

If the top government positions are to be won, the two promise a “disciplined bureaucracy,” including “proper spending of the national budget” to reach the treasury to remote parts of the country.

They are the third set of standard bearers to simultaneously file their COC, followed by PROMDI party bets Sen. Manny Pacquiao and Rep. Lito Atienza (Buhay Party-list), and Aksyon Demokratiko bets Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso and doctor Willie Ong.

It will be recalled that Lacson served as chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) from 1999 to 2001. He was a senator that year until 2021.

He is known for not using his Priority Development Assistance Fund (pork barrel), something often associated with corruption. Despite this, his name was implicated in the controversial deaths of publicist Salvador “Bubby” Dacer and his driver in 200 and of 11 members of Kuratong Baleleng in 1995 while leading the PNP.

From 1988 to 1992, Sotto (an actor and TV host) served as vice mayor of Quezon City before serving as a senator in his first two terms from 1992 to 2004.

He also served as chairperson of the Dangerous Drugs Board from 2008 to 2009 until he was appointed senator from 2010 to the present. He is also known for his conservative stances within the legislature, such as passing the divorce bill, reproductive health law, and measures aimed at legalizing marijuana use.
