A 31-year-old Iranian tourist has been jailed after she allegedly launched a drunken attack on a policeman in Puerto Galera.
Police spokesman Superintendent Socrates Faltado said the police officer also suffered cigarette burns. He identified the suspected attacker as Fereteh Najafi Marbouyeh.
Supt. Faltado said that at about 1.30am today (Monday, February 18) barangay officials called for help after Marbouyeh allegedly “started creating trouble in a small community of foreigners”. Officers immediately responded in Barangay Poblacion neighbourhood of Puerto Galera.
“She was banging the vehicles of passing motorists. She was drunk based on the report of our personnel,” he said.
The cops said they spoke to Marbouyeh and convinced her leave the area because local residents had been angered by her actions.
“Our personnel took her to a nipa hut beside the police station. That was for her safety because some residents might harm her because of her behaviour,” said Supt. Faltado.
At about 7.30am, officers tried to speak to her, believing her to have sobered up. However, she had not.
“She suddenly became violent again and cursed our policemen using a local invective,” said Supt. Faltado.
Morbouyeh reportedly tried to attack a rookie policewoman but a policeman intervened to shield her from the suspect’s alleged attack.
“This made the suspect more furious where she shoved her lighted cigarette to the left hand of the victim causing him to be burned, and also even threw punches and kicks which were evaded by the policeman,” said Supt. Faltado.
Other police officers then pinned down the suspect and took her to a detention cell at Puerto Galera Municipal Police Station.
Supt. Faltado said the Iranian tourist is now facing a case of direct assault.
Today’s incident comes about a week after Chinese fashion student Jiale Zhang splashed a cup of taho [soy pudding] on a policeman.
She was charged with three cases which include direct assault and is now in Bureau of Immigration custody facing deportation.
