A spokesman for the human rights group ‘Karapatan’ was gunned down in Sorsogon this on Wednesday night.
63-year-old Teodoro “Todoy” Escanilla was gunned down by an unknown assailant after he stepped outside his house to speak to somebody. His wife reported she heard the two talking but was unable to see the face of the man. Her husband referred to the man as “Alex” while in conversation.
Aside from being the spokesman for ‘Karapatan,’ Mr Escanilla was also a commentator for a local radio station in Sorsogon.
His radio talks often related to human rights violations and anti-military topics – some locals think the combination of both jobs created a ‘perfect storm’ for his death.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
