Authorities arrested an elderly German national for allegedly killing his Filipina wife. The suspect is believed to be suffering from mental illness.

Police arrested 75-year-old Martin Carl Otto Turk while trying to escape from their house on a small island off Pagbilao town in Quezon province, said Audie Madrideo, the provincial police director.

The decomposing body of Turk’s wife, who is also 75 years old, was found by her sister after the elderly couple failed to answer her calls. The body was covered in a blanket outside their house, the police report said.

Two days before the crime was discovered, the victim told her sister that she and her German national husband were fighting. The victim added the suspect had threatened to kill her.

The victim suffered from multiple stab wounds and a blow to the head, which resulted in her death, the initial investigation said.

The German national tried to flee on a boat, but the village watchmen caught him, Madrideo said.

He added that the suspect seemed to be suffering from mental illness and was caught naked.
Police were preparing to file criminal charges against the arrested German national, who had been living with his wife on the half-hectare island for the last 30 years.

Some teachers in Mt. Province walk 9 kilometers to get internet signal for webinar

Some teachers in Mountain Province have to endure several miles just to get an internet signal so they can take part in the Department of Education’s training-webinar.

Mariz Umali reported on GMA News “24 Oras,” four teachers at Maducayan Elementary School walked nine kilometers and crossed the river to reach the mountainous part of Barangay Saliok, which has a stable internet signal.

According to Julita Gumatay, headteacher, they don’t have a signal in their area, so they chose to go to the area with a strong signal above the mountain.

“Ang signal naman doon ay fluctuating, nawawala, kasi ‘yung ginagamit namin ay cellphone, pumunta kami doon sa hill, kumuha kami ng speaker para isa lang ang magamit na cellphone para hindi naman maagawan ‘yung signal,” she explained.

If the weather is favorable, the area can be reached within two hours. But if it is bad, it may take up to three hours as the road becomes slippery.

They do this for their sworn responsibilities as a teacher.
