A Filipino man was arrested yesterday on charges of swindling and threats after he posed as an Interpol Agent in the town of San Fernando, La Union.

53-year-old Alfredo Martelino was arrested after several complaints by residents of the city and also in San Juan, a nearby town.

Martelino promised jobs and 50,000 pesos a month in salary at his lending firm – he reportedly asked 15,000 pesos for his service and also asked those who fell for the scheme to pay an additional 3,000 pesos to make them members of Interpol.

The complaints in the case show that Martelino showed the victims an initial one million pesos check as a lending amount in his company – investors into the scheme never saw the suspect again until yesterday when he was spotted in a local plaza in San Fernando City.

Martelino did not stop there, when confronted he threatened to have the people that saw him arrested after they asked for their money back.

Those who saw the suspect sought the help of barangay officials who arrested Martelino. When officials investigated the fake Interpol agent further, they found he has swindled at least 3 million pesos in all from local residents throughout La Union region.
