Fortune teller Madam Auring dies at 80

Well-known fortune teller Madam Auring or Aurea Erfelo in real life passed away at the age of 80.

This was announced by his grandson Daryl Simon Pecson in a Facebook post on Friday, October 30, which he also confirmed to GMA News Online.

“Grabe ang pinagdaanan mo during your senior years pero you still worked hard for your family (us) i feel sad and happy,” Simon said.

“Sad kasi i will never see you again, mga wisdom words mo, korni jokes, happy bondings, and pagkurot sa aking pisngi hanggang mamula. Happy ako kasi, you have done everything you could to make us feel loved the way you know how, your struggles are over. You fought your battles silently. Magkikita na kayo ni Mama sa kabilang buhay,” he added.

Madam Auring’s family has not yet commented on her death. Still, another of her grandchildren, Mike Gibran, previously announced that Madam Auring was in the hospital when she celebrated her birthday in March.

Aurea Sabalboro, known professionally as Madam Auring, was a Filipino fortune teller and actress. According to her own account, she was one of “the five most famous women in Asia in the 1990s.”

Auring shot to fame when she correctly predicted Amparo Muñoz winning the 1974 Miss Universe title. Due to this event, she gained popularity, causing the boxer Muhammad Ali, who was in Manila due to the “Thrilla in Manila” boxing event, to seek her advice.

The American fortune teller, Phyllis Bury, had predicted Ali would lose against Joe Frazier but Auring correctly predicted his win. As a result, Ali gave her the nickname “Madam Auring.”

After this success, well-known personalities such as First Lady Imelda Marcos, Nora Aunor, Fernando Poe, Jr., President Joseph Estrada, Rolando Navarette, and Hollywood actors Robert Duvall and Franco Nero would later seek her advice. She fell in love with Larry Holmes, with whom she had a relationship before being married to his girlfriend in the United States.

Her other notable predictions included President Fidel V. Ramos’ win over rival Miriam Defensor Santiago, the death of starlet Claudia Zobel, the full and unimpeached term of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, and the break-up of Shalani Soledad and President Benigno Aquino III in 2010.

Besides being a fortune teller, Auring also worked as an actress, including a role where she starred together with the disqualified presidential candidate, Eddie Gil.
