The Makati Regional Trial Court handed down life sentences to five inmates who were caught smoking pot in Makati City Jail in April 2013.
In a five-page decision, the judge in the case ordered the inmates to also pay 500,000 pesos each as damages, on top of the sentences.
Records in the case show the five men were arrested by a member of the Intelligence Unit of the Makati Bureau of Jail Management and Protection on April 15, 2013. The five were inside the comfort room of a dormitory of Makati City Jail.
One member of the group was to be released from prison within a week after his original charges were dismissed. He will faces life inside with the four other men.
