Police have arrested five ‘tanods,’ or village watchmen, in Buhangin, Davao City for illegal possession of unregistered guns.

In a surprise raid at barangay hall on Friday morning, CIDG Police, Davao City Police, SWAT and Buhangin Police served a search warrant at 10 a.m. inside the village hall.

The five arrested watchmen – or ‘tanods’ – were identified as Allan Arabilla Badang, Cornelio Roquero Bughao, Ronald Junio Obtial, Arvin Bangquaw Cayunda, and Ricardo Oranza Dialoja, all of Barangay Communal.

Seized from the five men were six unlicensed firearms, including a 12-guage shotgun that was fully loaded.

Initial reports say that barangay officials and residents of Buhangin appeared before the CIDG Davao Office last month to report the firearms and those carrying them.

The Office of the Ombudsman sought a form request from CIDG officials in Davao and instructed them to conduct an investigation into the matter.

A search warrant was issued by Judge Emmanuel Carpio of the Regional Trial Court Branch #11 against Barangay chair Galvez and several of his barangay policemen.

Police are looking into the liability issues with Galvez as all those arrested were under his supervision.

Authorities say that multiple charges are being prepared against the five suspects under violation of Section 28 of Republic Act 10591 (the Illegal Possession of Firearms and Ammunition Act).
