Father joins son in jail after trying to bribe cops

A 65 -year -old father was arrested on Sunday in Mandaue City, Cebu after allegedly trying to bribe the police to free his son who was imprisoned for drugs.

The suspect was identified as Jose Gumban and allegedly an architect and businessman.

His son is John Andres Gumban, who was earlier caught in a buy-bust operation.

According to the police report, Jose allegedly tried to bribe policeman Lt. Alex Lagarto of P150,000 to withdraw the case and release John.

The police refused and it was there that the father was arrested.

Case of violation of Art. 212 of the Revised Penal Code (Corruption of Public Official) was filed against the suspect.

Jose is now detained at Cebu City Police Office Station 2.

Bribery of public officials is penalized under Articles 210 to 212 of the Revised Penal Code.

There are other laws that penalize corrupt acts/practices and prohibit the giving of gifts to public officers under certain circumstances.

Republic Act No. 3019 (The Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act) is the main anti-corruption law.

2 senior citizens arrested over unregistered boat

Police on Monday arrested 2 senior citizens who were fishing because what they were doing was illegal.

The incident happened in Sitio Camansi, Barangay Badas in this city.

Authorities found that the boat of Bernardo Tolin, 62, and Ernido Opo, 65, was not registered, so they could not fish there.

The 2 senior citizens were taken to the Philippine National Police Maritime Group temporary shelter and notified to go to the City Agriculture Office to register their boat.

According to the City Agriculture Office, a one-year registration of a motorized banca is P930 to P980.

Meanwhile, help poured in from netizens for the registration of Tolin and Opo’s boat, according to the Mati City Information Office.

Police also clarified that the two were not detained and their boat was not confiscated.

He also said the PNP Maritime Group provided fuel to the fishermen to return to their homes.
