Like other administrations, former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III also received criticisms. But apart from the criticisms, his character was also denigrated and labeled with various things.

Before stepping down in May 2016, GMA News anchor Vicky Morales interviewed Aquino exclusively and asked how the former Chief Executive felt about the criticisms against him.

“At the end of the day, we have to make a choice. The time is limited, and we cannot spend it on people who have close minds,” said Aquino.

“‘Pag naba-bother ‘yong mga kasamahan ko, sinasabi ko na bakit nila kailangang pakinggan at tsaka ba’t obligado. Dapat magtrabaho lang tayo nang magtrabaho.”

Some critics have also personally criticized Aquino, such as calling him “abnoy” or crazy.

“Lalo na ‘pag ‘yong name ko, ‘yon talaga ‘yong absence of any substance eh. To be honest, baka pinagdasal ko pa sila,” he added.

Aside from boosting the country’s economy and fighting corruption, one of his administration’s milestones is banning the use of “wang-wang” in officials’ vehicles to get on the streets-even with his security escort of the Presidential Security Group (PSG).

He said such use of wang-wang had become a symbol of abuse of power.

Aquino passed away yesterday morning at the age of 61.

According to his sister Pinky Aquino-Abellada, renal disease secondary to diabetes was the cause of the former president’s death.

Aquino often coughed in his speeches even when he was president, which led to speculations about the state of his health. In his 2015 State of the Nation Address, he will be remembered for coughing seven times. Noynoy is known to be a smoker.

In 2019, Noynoy was admitted to Makati Medical Center due to unspecified reasons. But, her spokeswoman Abigail Valte said, “scheduled check-up, and it’s just a “routine procedure.”

Before becoming president from 2010 to 2016, Aquino served as Tarlac’s representative in the House of Representatives from 1998 to 2007 and was a senator from 2007 to 2010.
