The Philippine Marine Mammal Stranding Network (PMMSN) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) have released the results of the necropsy and studies conducted on the death of 14 Fraser’s dolphins in Del Gallego, Camarines Sur on January 26, 2021.
It appears that dynamite blasts are the most possible cause of why 25 dolphins got stranded on the shore. Fourteen of them died later.
Scientists have found that dolphins are beautiful or healthy. The strong impact caused by dynamite blasts can cause their deaths.
It will be recalled that 25 Fraser’s dolphins were stranded off the coast of Barangay Magais 1, Del Gallego, Camarines Sur on January 26, 2021.
Ms. Nonie Enolva, Information Officer of BFAR Region 5 said that dynamite blasts are the cause of death of dolphins because they can be seen immediately in their physical condition.
Dynamite fishing is said to be rampant in Ragay Gulf.
PMMSN under the leadership of Dr. Lemnuel Aragones of the University of the Philippines performed the necropsy on January 27.
Guinayangan, Quezon Mayor Cesar Isaac and Del Gallego, Camarines Sur Mayor Melanie Abarrientos have vowed to intensify their campaign against illegal fishing in Ragay Gulf to prevent such incidents.
