Pres. Duterte urged to run for senator in Election 2022

PDP-Laban president and Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi confirmed that the party is encouraging President Rodrigo Duterte to run for senator in the upcoming May 2022 elections.

According to Cusi, if Duterte runs for senator, he will also be the campaign manager of Senators Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa and Christopher “Bong” Go, the party’s presidential and vice-presidential bets in the election.

“Now, if the President would not run for vice president because he is firm on his decision not to go back on his word, I said why not run for the Senate so he could bring change there? That will be good for the country,” said Cusi on Wednesday.

According to Cusi, if Duterte becomes a senator, he will advance the reforms that the PDP-Laban wants in the legislature.

Cusi also believes that Duterte can strengthen the Dela Rosa-Go tandem due to the president’s high approval rating.

“As I said, he will be our best campaign manager during the campaign,” he said.

He also said that there would be no problem if Duterte decides to run for vice president because the Go-Duterte tandem is their party’s original plan, according to Cusi.

The Palace has not yet responded to Cusi’s statement about persuading Duterte to run for senator.

Cusi’s PDP-Laban faction is being questioned in the Commission on Elections of the PDP-Laban faction to Senators Koko Pimentel and Manny Pacquiao.

Early this month, Duterte announced that he would no longer run for vice president and retire from politics.

“The overwhelming sentiment of the Filipinos is that I am not qualified, and it would be a violation of the constitution to circumvent the law,” the 76-year-old Duterte said. “Today, I announce my retirement from politics.”

Meanwhile, Bong bong Marcos told reporters earlier that the PFP would have planned for  to be his vice-presidential candidate.

“The original plan was for us to adopt PRRD (President Rodrigo Roa Duterte) for our vice presidential candidate, pero sa mga nangyari noong nakaraang Sabado ay nagbago lahat ng plano,” he said.
