Duterte accepts PDP-Laban’s endorsement to run for vice president

President Rodrigo Duterte has accepted PDP-Laban’s endorsement to run for vice president in the 2022 elections.

Executive vice president Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said Duterte accepted “the clamor of the people and accepted the endorsement of the PDP Laban Party for him to run as Vice President in the 2022 National Elections.”

The development came after the PDP-Laban-Cusi wing announced they adopted a resolution endorsing the Bong Go-Rodrigo Duterte tandem next year.

However, Go said he was “still not interested” to run for president.

“Nakatutok ako sa aking tungkulin bilang senador upang tulungan ang bansa na malampasan ang krisis na ating hinaharap. Bakuna muna bago pulitika. Mas mabuti unahin niyo na muna yung mga interesado na tumakbong Pangulo,” he said.

“Running for vice president, ako. Sabihin ko, it is not at all a bad idea. And if there is space for me there . . . Siguro,” said Duterte.

“Pero kung wala ako space, and everybody is crowding up, wanting to be one, vice president, sila na lang muna kasi tapos na ako. But there are things that I like to continue, and that would be dependent on the president that I will support.”

Duterte also said he wanted to run for the second-highest position in the country to avoid facing lawsuits.

However, a former dean of the University of the Philippines-College of Law, the incumbent vice of the country, is not immune to lawsuits.

“Dito po sa Saligang Batas natin, walang teksto o walang probisyon tungkol sa presidential immunity,” said Atty. Pacifico Agabin.

“Nakuha lang natin itong  doctrine sa mga desisyon ng Korte Suprema. Sabi ng Korte Suprema, only the sitting President, enjoys immunity from suit in the performance of his official functions,” he added.
