Duterte’s last SONA focused on fight against communism, drugs

President Rodrigo Duterte’s last State of the Nation Address (SONA) focused on various issues on Monday.

Duterte reviewed the laws passed under him, such as free education, universal health care, the campaign against illegal drugs, eradicating communism, and more.

Although he promised many more when he took office, his tenure is limited to 6 years.

He admitted that his term had been met with criticism but said that he did what was right for the majority.

“If there is one thing I can be proud of, not once did I waver in doing the unpopular if it means upholding common good to the greatest number,” he said.

During the first hour of the SONA, the speech was marked by the performance of the police and soldiers, particularly the campaign against the communists.

Duterte also appealed to Congress to enact legislation for a “unified system for separation, retirement and pension” of uniformed personnel and provide a system and funds to protect them when charged “in the line of duty” or while doing work.

The President is also investigating an official who allegedly imported weapons that go to communists and criminals.

Duterte also denounced the ill effects of drugs on the Filipino family, so he said that he was determined to suppress it even though he was accused of human rights violations due to the number of people killed.

The President also thanked all the frontliners who have been heroes in this pandemic and all those who helped alleviate the crisis caused by COVID-19.

“Allow me to extend personal and nation’s gratitude to all those who selflessly gave their all in the fight against COVID-19. Health workers, frontliners who risked their own safety to keep essential health services and food chain running.”

The President reiterated that he did not want to change his dealings with China over the dispute in the West Philippine Sea.

The President said he has already conveyed the Philippines’ position to ASEAN and the United Nations concerning the victory in the arbitral ruling.

But the President believes that China will never be convinced to recognize it by believing that arbitration did not occur because only the Philippine side was heard.

What the President did not mention in the SONA, China itself refused to join the arbitration.

The President also praised China for its assistance in the midst of the pandemic.

When it comes to corruption, the President admitted that it would be difficult to eradicate within six years.
