Duterte to give P5K per family in Odette-hit areas

President Rodrigo Duterte announced the government would give P5,000 per family in areas hit by Typhoon Odette.

“May pera naman. I am giving P5,000 per family. Itong pera na nakuha ko, which I have gathered, will be sufficient for the assistance of P5,000 for everybody,” the President said in his weekly Talk to the People.

According to Interior Secretary Eduardo Año, the government issued guidelines on the distribution of cash aid.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) would give around P4 billion to families displaced by the typhoon.

“Humigit kumulang P4 billion ang pamimigay na ayuda… Ayon sa DBM (Department of Budget and Management), mare-release bukas sa mga LGUs,” Año said.

Duterte conducted an aerial inspection and said Kabankalan town in Negros Occidental was not as damaged as other areas.

“It was only later when we were informed na sa Sipalay, maraming na-damage, pati tao.  So kayong mga taga-Sipalay, we convey to you our deepest condolences,” he said.

“It’s soul-bruising experiences for us all,” Duterte added.

The President said he would return to the typhoon-hit areas to see the damage.

“Back up lang ako ng national agencies, but babalikan ko ‘yung lugar na tinatamaan,” he said.

Last week, Duterte promised to raise an additional P10 billion to rehabilitate the provinces affected by typhoon Odette.

Duterte specifically ordered the Department of Social Welfare and Development to continue providing family food packs, water, and shelter  to families whose homes were damaged.

He also instructed the Department of Trade and Industry to monitor the price of goods, including generators reported to have doubled in price.

Meanwhile, PNP Chief PGen Dionardo Carlos assigned his personnel in the areas devastated by the typhoon to monitor the prices of basic products.

This is to assist the Department of Trade and Industry in implementing a “price freeze” in areas where a state of calamity exists.
