Duterte advises daughter Sara on running for president in 2022

President Rodrigo Duterte advised his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte not to run for president in 2022 if she would do it only for ambition.

Duterte made the advice to his daughter in his speech before the Sulu soldiers on Monday, which was released on Tuesday.

“Huwag kang mag-presidente unless you see something na kaya mo para gawin sa bayan,” the country’s chief executive said.

(Do not become president unless you see something you can do for the people.)

“[But] for just a matter of ambition? Lay off. Wala ka talagang makukuha diyan, pagod lang,” he added.

The mayor’s name is among those floating who could run in the 2022 election in place of his father.

In his speech, the president said that there is no money for being the leader of the country unless corruption is allowed.

Duterte said some military generals earn more than the president.

“Trabaho mo presidente? Susmaryosep! Suweldo mo P194,000. May ibang general dito mas malaki pa sa suweldo ko, sa totoo lang,” he said.

(Do you work as president? My God! Your salary is P194,000. There are other generals here that have an even bigger salary than me, honestly.)

“Trabaho ka diyan (presidency), wala kang makuha. Unless gusto mong mamera, ah kaya,” Duterte added.

When presidential spokesperson Harry Roque was asked to clarify Duterte’s statements, Roque said the president only wanted to emphasize that being a president is a “thankless job.”

“Ayaw niya na ganyan ‘yung buhay ng kaniyang anak. He is saying it’s the most thankless job in the country, and he has said that consistently,” Roque explained.

(He does not want that kind of life for his child.)

“There is no gain to becoming a president unless you’re corrupt. It’s all public service. That’s what he’s saying,” he added.
