Duterte signs 10-days of ‘national mourning’ for PNoy

President Rodrigo Duterte has already signed the “10 days of mourning” for the passing of former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III died Thursday at the Capitol Medical Center in Quezon City due to renal disease secondary to diabetes. He is 61-years-old.

“[I] t is fitting to devote a period of national mourning to pay tribute to a respected leader who left a lasting legacy to the Filipino people,” Duterte said in his Proclamation 1169, Thursday.

“NOW, THEREFORE, I, RODRIGO ROA DUTERTE, President of the Republic of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by the Constitution and existing laws, do hereby declare 24 June 2021 to 03 July 2021 as a Period of National Mourning over the passing of former President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III.”

He said this is also in accordance with Section 23 (a), Chapter 1 of Republic Act 8491, in recognition of the death of a former president of the republic.

Digong also stated condolence on Thursday to recognize Noynoy’s contribution as state leader-even though Duterte has repeatedly criticized the previous Aquino administration and ten members of his Liberal Party.

“Let us take this opportunity to unite in prayer and set aside our differences as we pay respects to a leader who has given his best to serve the Filipino people,” said Duterte.

“His memory and his family’s legacy of offering their lives for the cause of democracy will forever remain etched in our hearts.”

Duterte says this even though he is known to be close and has endorsed in previous elections Sen. Imee Marcos and former Sen. Bongbong Marcos, who is also the son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

The Aquino family, led by Noynoy’s father, Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., is a well-known critic of the Marcoses.

Noynoy is scheduled to be buried with Ninoy and Cory at Manila Memorial Park tomorrow, June 26, 2021.
