DOH records 182 new cases of Delta variant

An additional 182 new Delta variant cases in the country led to an increase of 807 confirmed cases, based on the results of the latest genome sequencing conducted by the DOH, UP-Philippine Genome Center, and UP-National Institutes of Health.

Apart from 182 new Delta (B.1.617.2) variant cases, 41 new Alpha (B.1.1.7) variants, 66 Beta (B.1.351), 40 P.3, and the first Lambda case (C.37) were also recorded in the country.

Of the additional 182 Delta variant cases, 112 are local cases, 36 are Returning Overseas Filipinos (ROF), and 34 cases are still being verified as local or ROF cases.

Of the 112 Delta variant local cases, 42 were from the National Capital Region (NCR), 36 in Central Luzon, eight in CALABARZON, six in MIMAROPA, six from Northern Mindanao, four in Central Visayas, three in Davao Region, three in Caraga, two in Western Visayas, one case in the Cordillera Administrative Region and once case Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

Meanwhile, the Philippines’ COVID-19 reproduction number is 1.46, while the National Capital Region (NCR) is at 1.90.

According to the OCTA Research Group, it was only from August 8 to 14 when the country recorded an average of 11,000 new COVID-19 cases per day.

They expect that new cases of the disease will continue to rise next week.

Meanwhile, in a Twitter post, OCTA Fellow Dr. Guido David said the reproduction number in NCR is now at 1.90 on August 14 from only 1.85 on August 13.

According to David, this means that one COVID-19 patient can infect up to two more people.

Hospital bed occupancy in the region is at 64%, while ICUs have reached 71% for the first time since May 5, 2021.

The average daily attack rate (ADAR) or incidence rate in Metro Manila is reported at 21.95 cases per 100,000 population, which means it is now under the “high risk” classification.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health confirmed Monday that the first Lambda variant case in the Philippines is local.

“The patient is a local case, hindi po siya returning overseas  base po sa further validation [She is not a returning overseas Filipino based on further validation],” Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in a radio interview.
