A digger driver found what appears to be a World War Two bomb on Tuesday morning at a construction site at the Old Airport in the Mandurriao district of Iloilo City.

Noel Ocampo excavated the bomb, which was found in a horizontal position, about three or four metres below ground, according to Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, spokesman of the Iloilo City Police Office.

A police investigation suggested that it could be a 1000-lb air-dropped bomb. “But we are still coordinating with the Philippine Army’s Explosives Ordnance Division on the proper disposition of the bomb,” Gorero said.

Pending the findings from the EOD, the condition of the casing or the integrity of the ordnance could not be confirmed yet, Gorero said, adding that there would be no attempt for a controlled detonation on site.

No evacuation was implemented but construction workers were told not to work in the area and the nearby vicinity until the bomb will be properly disposed.
